Sakleshpura Trek

Green Route aka Sakleshpura Railway track trekking is one of those treks that every trekker wants to have in his Done List.It is amongst the most popular treks in the trekkers community. I had been dreaming about trekking along the green route for the past 2 years and this urge intensified when I saw the railway track high among the forest cover while returning from Amedhikallu trek. The railway track that runs along the hill side can seen from NH-48 and invites for an awesome trekking experience.

With the holiday season of October just a few weeks away, we started planning for a long get-away from work and routine daily business. We started looking for a 3-4 day trip and decided upon trekking the Green route from Donigal to Edukumeri and then move on to Murudeshwara and Gokarna. We were told that since the train service has been resumed on the Sakleshpura track, trekking is banned there and it would be dangerous to go there. We moved ahead with the trek with a contingency plan in place :P :) .

Sakleshpura is in Hassan District around 230 kilometers from Bangalore. The railway track runs continues until Mangalore. The green-route track trekking can be started from Sakleshpura and finishes at Subramanya Road Railway Station 48 kilometers away. This track was abandoned for a couple of decades without any train service and hence became a ideal place for trekkers.Recently after the meter gauge conversion, train service has resumed and Bangalore-Mangalore train runs on this track.

We engaged a tempo-traveller for the journey and after roaming around most of Bangalore for picking up my friends,we finally hit Tumkur road towards Sakleshpura at 11:30 in the night. We spent the night playing cards and watching movies and with just under an hour of sleep,we reached Sakleshpura at 4 early morning. We waited near the tea shops until daybreak and were welcomed by early morning showers. We took directions for Donigal railway station from local people and moved towards our trek starting point. Donigal is around 8 kilometers from Saklespura and the track can be reached from the Donigal Railway station. At milestone number 234 of NH-48 ,after crossing the bridge, a road at the right takes to the Donigal Railway Station.

We started our trek at 6:30 in the morning and a calm sun rising from behind the clouds just above the forest was an awesome sight.Donigal Railway Station is at 50KM milestone and our destination Edukumeri Railway Station is at 67KM milestone. With long day of trek ahead, we started moving along the track. The sight of ever lasting railway tracks and the thick forest cover was a new experience. The journey of life looks similar to the walk on these tracks. With the past behind, life is all about moving towards your destination overcoming the obstructions by building the bridges and tunnels.

After walking for about half and hour, at milestone 52KM, we came across the first bridge.Though it was a small one around 50m leng th, I crossed it with a bit of hesitation and fear.Crossing the first bridge felt like a new achievement. We moved on taking a few photography breaks and had our breakfast near a stream that runs across the track.Shortly, we came across our first tunnel.Walking through the pitch dark tunnels with just torch as the only source of light was exciting. I and Balu also tried a 100m meter dash in one of the tunnels and I lost the race. :(

Just after crossing one of the tunnels,we heard the sound of train at the distance. We thought that the train was still a kilometer away and we could cross the bridge. While we were half-way through on the bridge,we saw the train coming towards us. We turned around and ran towards the start of the bridge to find a stable piece of land. The long goods train crossed us we were happy to find a train on the track giving company for us.

This pic reminds me of the kannada novel 'Jugari Cross' which has references to this track.

The 'Killer Bridge'

View of the stream beneath the bridge

The bridge again

We were covering around 3KM every hour and at around 11,we came to the bridge famously called as "Killer Bridge" at milestone 61. The bridge is around 150 m length and a 20o ft high. A river stream flows below the bridge and it was flowing at rapid speed. Few of my friends climbed down the bridge along the forest to take bath in the stream.

We met one of the railway guards in the way and inquired our exit point. Our plan was to take the path behind Edukumeri station towards the forest and cross Kempuhole and reach NH-48. The guard told us that Kempuhole was overflowing due to the recent rains and we would not be able to cross it. He told us that we could continue trekking from Edukumeri until 75th KM milestone and reach the highway or we could take a detour at 64KM to move to ongrala village and join the Bisle Ghat road and take bus to Sakleshpura. We decided to move on towards Edukumeri which turned out to be a wrong decision :) .

We reached Edukumeri Railway station at 67th KM at 3 in the afternoon and had our lunch. Upon enquiring, the station master at Edukumeri said that it would not be possible to cross kempuhole to reach the road. We requested him if he could stop any Goods or Engine that would take us to Subramanya Road. He wasn't much helpful and we had to spend the night in the railway station in the severe cold. The cold breeze made me shiver the whole night and I was eagerly waiting for the dawn to escape from this station.

At 4:30 in the morning, we caught the Bangalore-Mangalore express train and took a ticket less journey to Subramanya Road Station. Balu and Shreyas had more adventure in store for them. They got down at Shiribagilu station at 5:30 in the morning, raced through the forest track to Gundya to get our tempo traveler to Subramanya Road station.

It was a dream come true to complete the one of the most awaited treks. It was a thrilling hike along the tracks with ranges of mountains and streams and waterfalls visible all around you.The tunnels and bridges added to the excitement of the trek.In the long day of trek,we crossed over 25 bridges and 17 tunnels. The longest tunnel was of length 572m and the tallest bridge ("Killer Bridge"-bridge no 20) is of height around 200ft.

We then moved on to Dharmasthala, Murudeshwara. Murudeshwara is around 120 kilometers from Udupi. It has a temple of Shiva on the shore of the Arabian sea.We stayed overnight in Murudeshwara. We enjoyed swimming at the beach and the early morning beach volleyball match at Murudeshwara.

We then moved on to Gokarna 90 kilometers from Murudeshwara and visited the Mahabaleswara temple and Om beach .We returned back to Bangalore life on Sunday morning.
Date : October 1st to October 5th.
Total Distance covered: 1100 kilometers

Saturn and its moon family

Saturn has always amused the astronomers (and astrologers too ;-) ). The serene beauty of the planet invites astronomers and space-enthusiasts towards me. The second biggest planet, after Jupiter, in the solar system Saturn has 31 moons revolving around it .

Titan, the largest moon of saturn and second largest in the solarsystem is the only known moon with dense atmosphere.

The spacecraft Cassini has sent has incredible pictures and information of Saturn and its moons.

Here are some pictures from Big Picture :

Adventure Sports at Ramanagara

Date : March 15,2008

We had been trekking to different places over the past two years and our gang started to look into other adventure activities. The obvious choice was to try out rock climbing and other activities. We contacted Venture Adventure club which organises one-day adventure activities near Ramanagara( the place famous as Ramgarh of Sholay fame) ,around 40 kilometers from Bangalore.

We went to Ramanagara and the people from the adventure club taught us the techniques of rock-climbing and we were involved in various activities like Rappeling, Rock Climbing, chimney climbing, river crossing etc.

There is not much risk involved in few of the activities with all the safety gears in place but still it was a nice experience.

Amedikallu Trek

Amedikallu is one of those trekking spot that is not known to many people. A beautiful hill in the midst of the forests and it is one of the best and hardest treks I have done so far.

We had booked for Qualis and left Bangalore at 11:30 towards Mangalore.Amedikallu can be reached through the village of Shishila. On NH-48 highway to Mangalore, one has to take a deviation to the left at Kokkada and travel further 15 kilometers towards Shishila.

We reached Shishila at around 7 in the morning. We made our way to Mr. Gopu Ghokale's house in Shishila which was our base camp. Gopu Ghokale arranges for food and guide for the trek. We had our breakfast in his house and left for the trek at 10 with our guide,Chennappa.

The starting point of the trek is 4 kilometers further in a jeep track and from there we started our trek in the dense forest. The first 2 hours of trek involves climbing hills through the dense forests. After that we reached a plain patch of grassland from where we caught the first glimpse of Amedikallu. It is an awesome sight of the monolith rock and each one of us were excited to climb it.

First view of Amedikallu

The word "Amedikallu" comprises of two words- "Ame" meaning turtle and "Dikel" meaning stove in tulu language. From far, the hill resembles the Turtle shell and the 3 stones of a stove and hence the hill gets this name.

Yettinabuja

All along the trek, the other hill that amused us was "Yettina Buja", the hill whose appearance resembles the Bull's shoulder. Our guide Chennappa told that it can also be trekked. Hoping to trek that hill one day :)

After another hour through the grasslands ,we reach the base of the hill. From here we start the real rock-climbing. The hill was steep and we had to stop every 5minutes to take a breath and enjoy the view all around us. Late in the afternoon, we reached the base of the 3 rocks and had our lunch there and relaxed for some time.

After reaching the base of the 'dikel' , to climb to the peak ,we need to go into the dense forest. Trek for another 45 minutes took us to the top of the hill. The peak of the hill was another 25 metres climb and this part was a real risky one. You have to climb the hill with enough space to keep one foot and one missed step, there is a dead drop into which you end up falling into.

At last ,we reached the peak of Amedhikallu at around 5. We then moved down from the peak to find our camping spot. We decided to camp in the forests bit further down the hill. We collected the dry wood from the forest and made a camp-fire and had our dinner. We slept in the tents and the sleeping bags we had brought and had a good sleep but for the loud scream by one of dreamers!!

We got up early in the morning to catch the sunrise and moved up to the peak to catch the sun. We then started to climb down the hill at around 7:30 in the morning and reached Gopu Gokale's place by 11:30. We had a refreshing bath in the river kapila and delicious lunch at Gopu Gokale's place before leaving for Bangalore.

All in all,an awesome trekking experience and memories that will last a lifetime

Mullayangiri Trek

It had been some time since we had gone for a trek and the time was perfect to conquer the highest peak of karnataka. We started planning for this trip around three weeks before, and with lot of people showing their eagerness to join us for the trek, we set off to Mullayangiri on November 2nd,2007. It was a huge gang of 18 who went for this trek.

Mullayangiri is highest peak in Karnataka(6317 ft above sea level) and is located in the BabaBudanGiri range of the western ghats, near Chikamagalur.

We left Bangalore around 11 in the night and reached Chikamagalur ,210 kms from Bangalore early morning. From there, we moved on towards Mullayangiri. There is a place called Sarpadari from where we started the trekking to the peak and it is around 15 kms from chikamagalur through a village called Kaimara. There is a Iron Entrance at Sarpadari that helps to identify the start point for the trek. The scenery while climbing the peak is astonishing. One can feel the mist and winds lash at you at great speeds.

Starting point of the trek, Sarpadari

There is a Nandi that we come across while climbing towards peak near the half way mark and another one just near the peak. There is a cave near the peak and it was great fun trying to explore the dark cave inhibited by bats. It took just over an hour for us to reach the Mullayangiri Peak. The peak can also reached via road that leads until the base of the hillock and then one has to climb around 100 steps to reach the peak. ( Much simpler than trekking, but trekking is lot more fun!!)

View from the top of Mullayangiri

View of Bababudangiri Range from the peak. You can see the tower at Bababudangiri at the top of the pic

There is a temple at the peak and we spent some time at the peak roaming around the place. Our next plan was to trek to BabaBudanGiri around 12 kilometers away.

We started our trek towards Bababudangiri at around 1 in the afternoon. There is a gate behind the temple that leads towards BabaBudangiri. It was long trek and after crossing 6-7 hills we reached the Vivekananda point. From there we descended to the road. From the road,we found it difficult to find the path towards the TV tower which is very near to BabaBudangiri and explored our way to climb the tallest hill so that we can catch sight of the tower.

We had taken a different route towards Bababudangiri and had to walk along the deadly edges of the hills. After a tiring journey,I and Keerthy passed alongside the tower and reached Manikyadhara at around 5. The group of 18 was broken to smaller groups and each of them started reaching Manikyadhara by sunset. Manikyadhara has a waterfall that is believed to have medicinal qualities. It is around 5 kms from Bababudangiri .

We then took a jeep to climb down to Bababudangiri.

We camped in a ground in Bababudangiri and tried to lit the camp fire. It was real cold and the winds were blowing at high speeds that made it difficult to lite the camp fire. While a few of us decided to sleep under the tents on the ground others resorted to the van to spend the night.

The next morning , we visited the Datta Peetha and moved towards Kemmanagundi to see the Hebbe Falls. Hebbe Falls is around 10 kms from Kemmanagundi. While moving from BabaBudangiri to Kemmanagundi, we found a few guides who offered to take us to the falls. Hebbe Falls can be reached by jeep till a estate and then we need to walk another 3-4 kms to reach the falls. Hebbe falls gushes down in two stages called Dodda Hebbe and Chikka Hebbe.

Maaribetta Trek

It had been long since we last went on a bike trek. The final semester was approaching and we wanted a trek before we get lost in the maze of project work ,exams etc, etc.

We planned for a trek to Maaribetta. Maaribetta is a hill near Kanakapura, perfect for a one-day trek. It was eleven of us who left Bangalore at around 8 in the morning towards Kanakapura , 50 kms south of Bangalore. After breakfast at Kanakapura, we started enquiring the localites about Maaribetta and surprisingly none of them knew the where it was.!! After some search and guidance from some localities, we found the correct path to your trekking spot.

After travelling 4-5 kms from Kanakapura towards Ramanagara, we need to take a left and move on kuccha road to reach a small village. We parked our vehicles in one of the huts in the village and moved towards the foot of the hill. There are two hills and initially tried to climb the bigger one but it was densely covered with shrubs and there was no suitable route to the top.
We then found few local boys who obliged to be our guides for the day and took us along the smaller hill.

After the climb of the smaller hill , a few people decided not to go further and returned back to the village. Six of us descended the smaller hill at the other side and moved through the forest to reach the Durga temple. It was around 2 in the afternoon when we reached the temple.

There is a route to trek the bigger hill from the Durga temple but we could not proceed further and returned to the village through the forest route between the two hills.

Here's Pavan's Blog about the trek.

Destination : Maaribetta

The First Treks

My trekking experience started with a bike trip to Savanadurga during my 4th semester. Savanadurga situated 60 kms from Bangalore, near Magadi is a Beginner's Paradise for Trekking. Savandurga is a monolith rock hill at an altitude of 4,050 ft and has remains of the fort built by kempegowda.

We left Bangalore at 7 in the morning and reached the hill base at 9 after having our breakfast at Magadi. The trek took around one and half hour. There is a temple at the top of the hill.

After spending some time exploring the hill top,we descended and took the road towards the Mysore Road.On the way back to Bangalore, we visited Manchinabele Dam and Big Banyan Tree.

The Gang: Balu, Srikanth, Keerthy, Datta, Gupta, Rajesh

Siddarabetta -February 2006

After the trip to Savanadurga, more trekking was soon to follow. The next was a bike trek to Siddarabetta near tumkur. Siddarabetta is a hill in Tumkur district around 110 kms from Bangalore. One has to take a devitation to the left after 2 kms from koratagere while going to Madhugiri. It is famous for the medicinal plants that grows on the hill. There wasnt much diffculty to reach the hilltop since there were stairs. We visited the temple on the top. There was a guide available who offered to show us around the hill. The hill has a large number of caves and at places u need to crawl on your legs to move on to the next stretch. It is an amazing place for cave exploration. After going around the caves for over an hour, we came out to the open. We were told that there were lot more caves and it would take around 3 hours to cover them all.

Another interesting point is that there are no crows in this region. The Guide told us some mythological reason and I dont quite remember the story now :P

On the way back to Bangalore, we visited Devarayanadurga. It has a temple at the top and is a well known hill station.
